Mary Greenwell is one of the world’s most sought-after make-up artists. Her influence over the fashion and beauty industries is undisputed. From creating new trends on the catwalk to winning numerous beauty awards, Mary continues to be one of the best in the industry.
Mary’s foray into make-up started by chance when she moved from England to Los Angeles, and worked for make-up brand Il Makiage, the legendary cosmetics line. Ilana Harkavi, the owner of Il Makiage and a widely respected make-up artist herself, soon noticed Mary’s talent and took her under her wing. Mary began assisting Ilana at the New York boutique and then accompanying her on photo shoots. In the mid-80’s Mary moved to Paris where she began working with the most noted photographers of the time including Patrick Demarchelier, Paolo Roversi and Peter Lindbergh. Mary began working between New York City, London and Paris regularly.
Notable publications she worked for include Vogue Italia, Vogue UK and Vogue in particular working with editors Grace Coddington and Liz Tilberis. Mary worked on some of the most defining covers on some of the most amazing girls including the ‘Supermodels’ Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour and Cindy Crawford. A defining moment in Mary’s career was when Liz Tilberis introduced her to Diana, Princess of Wales. Mary helped to re-define her image and worked on some of the most iconic photo shoots with her.
Mary has continued to be the must have makeup artist for celebrities and travels the world to make up clients such as Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried and Uma Thurman. She has continuing collaborations with Chanel, Estee Lauder, Sisley and SK-II. Mary recently announced her own line of fragrances, PLUM and LEMON, which have proved to be very successful in their own right and will lead very soon into beauty products.
Mary’s input and taste is highly sought after amongst all of the current beauty writers and she consults for spectacles brand Silhouette. Over the years, Mary has become involved with key charities including Breast Cancer Awareness and NSPCC and offers her services readily. Mary Greenwell continues to define the essence of a ‘Celebrity Makeup Artist’ and still inspires her peers and new generations in the profession with her approach and style.
